+LINKxNAVI
Like other fans I too enjoy speculating and supporting pairings within anime, manga and video games. Everyone has their own view on these, no matter how obvious, odd or perfectly matched they are.
Not many people would notice, or even support, my idea of Link and Navi, but that's what I'm here for; to oppose the popularity and fill the world with my daft, yet intriguing thoughts.

This pairing isn't as daft as you think, not when there's hard evidence. Okay, it my just be that they're not in romantic love, just love as in a strong friendship, but nevertheless, that fact remains that Link and Navi are paired together by fate (I mean paired together for the adventure, not romantically). Yes, Navi is a small fairy, and Link is (presumably) human height, but does that stop love and friendship? No. I know their massive size difference prevents them from kissing etc, but the main reason I believe the opposition of my opinions would be cross-breeding. Not entirely the best, but think what you're trying to do when you pair Link up with Ruto the Zora, and indeed Saria the Kokiri (aside from getting jailed for paedophilia, it's still apparently 'wrong' in the sense that Saria is a different race). Race difference isn't something The Legend of Zelda cares about.
I don't particularly mind pairing Link with others per say, but - I'm sorry- I just HATE Zelda. My crush on Link has disagreed with the cliché idea of the hero and the princess. Sure, they're friendly, but I can't stand the thought of these two together. I've always opposed popularity.

If your not convinced by my non-stop drivel, then read more of it whilst I explain my strong and backed-up views and annotations regarding this sweet couple.

About Link ( リンク, rinku)
In every Zelda game, Link is the young hero summoned to protect the land from evil. No matter his incarnation, from game to game, he's a very kind, polite, and most of all, courageous. Blessed by the goddesses with the Triforce of Courage, Link has a real sense of purpose, and goes about his adventure without fuss or any draw-backs.

Link has a heart - and a strong, deep one at that - so I'm not saying he's a straight forward brave, nobleman. Being the generous boy he is, Link's heart is as complex as any other, thus giving him a conscience. He knows what's right and wrong, but Link's bravery causes his to act on whims (within some limits, he's not a total idiot. Yet he has always been willing to lay down his life for those he loves). Some may call this being 'over-zealous' but I call it 'bravery'. When it comes to girls, Link goes about them as he would any other, except we can't forget he's a teenager filled with a mass of raging hormones so more than likely Link'll feel something for the girls like us fans speculate.

About Navi (ナビィ, nabii)
Navi is a fairy residing in the Kokiri territory who was sent to aid Link on his quest by the Great Deku Tree. Her main role within game play is to Z-Target enemies, learn their names and weaknesses, and to find some hidden secrets. Obviously, in the manga etc there's no need for Z-Targeting, but Link still appreciates her as an invaluable source of information, protection and company.

She's very sweet, smart, magical, and though she's not as brave as Link, she proves very handy because of her ability to sense evil and the like. And as a guardian fairy, Navi is obliged to look after Link and does seem to enjoy it. Not that she doesn't get along with other characters but she mostly interacts with her partner. Navi thinks for world of Link - and I don't think it's just because of her job.

The Pair of Them
The two met at Link's house (ooh, cheeky), when the Great Deku Tree sent Navi to find him. Being in deficit of a fairy all his life, and believe he's suppose to have one, Link got exited about having a fairy in the manga. In the game he sat on the edge of his bed as he listened to her.

In the game, Link just seems either content or indifferent with Navi because neither of them interact much, nor constantly in full conversation (cor, you wouldn't think of it to look at Navi, would you?). For the sake of the game play and the players, Link is a mute and almost unemotional character who gets on with the quest, while Navi is merely the thing to help you, that's all it is.

I said 'indifferent', but I doubt that's what it is. Link only acknowledges Navi when she's speaking or pointing at something so it's not total ignorance. In the manga, even he gets agitated with her nagging, but they speak and interact more to show it. Link understands Navi is smart about the outside world he knows little about, so he takes her words seriously, yet with a pinch of salt as he acts quickly on it. As depicted by the manga, Navi and Link care about each other's well being.

Sure, Link gets a bit annoyed, and they even fall out in the bonus chapter, but it's normal for two friends too argue. To brings them together and proves they can understand each other. If a pair aren't close enough, why won't have anything to argue about.

Navi: No, no! Too many openings!
Link: Be quiet, Navi, how can I concentrate?
Navi: What? I'm just trying to help!

Navi: Don't be such a sap! Geez!
Link: Navi, you're always nagging me! If I'm so bad go follow someone else!
Navi: Don't tempt me, Link! I'm only hear because the Great Deku Tree asked me to look after you!

Despite what they say, they made it up in the end, and carried out their relationship which unfolds into a deeper friendship. I'm not trying to make excuses but Navi probably said that last quote because she was angry because she was picked on by Rouru.

The Explicable
These are the obvious and factual points to back-up their relationship.

#1 This isn't conclusive evidence but it's amusing. Navi and Link were named for nouns; 'Navigation' and 'Link'. In the world of website design links are found under the navigation.

#2 My trump card for this paring is that Miyamoto Shigeru stated in an interview for Ocarina of Time that Navi is jealous of Zelda because she has feelings for Link.

Interviewer: Does Link have a girlfriend?
Miyamoto: If it was Princess Zelda, it would be great. However, this time Navi [the fairy] is jealous of Zelda. So within the story, Navi feels something for Link. (

#3 At the end of the manga, Navi's last words were "Link, I love you."

#4 In Majora's Mask, Link is looking for Navi. In the manga, he "misses her", and says she's his "best friend" and a "cute and kind fairy".

The Inexplicable
These are the less obvious, factual and speculated points to back-up their relationship.

#1 They both show care and concern for each other's well being and feelings.

#2 Close friends will always argue at some point. It's the natural order of things.

#3 In correspondence to the fact that Navi is jealous of Link's relationship with Zelda, it does seem she'd rather stick up for Saria when Link is still drooling over Zelda. Great minds DO think alike; I'd stick up for Saria too (but not before Navi, obviously).

Defying Evidence
Yes, even I have seen draw-backs on this couple, I can see something wrong with any pairing, but it doesn't mean I'm supporting it. This page exists to understand clearly the reasons why Link and Navi aren't/shouldn't be romantically involved.

Link and Navi aren't the same race. Cross-breeding's gross, and besides, Navi is too small to incorporate Link. It's not good on Link's part that he can't even see what Navi looks like, other than a glowing orb with wings.
Like I've stated, love comes from the heart not form the front of your trousers, and anyway, Hylians and fairies are more magical creatures than us (pathetic) humans. Maybe Link can actually see Navi's face, or has a vision of it. No one said that the fairies of the Legend of Zelda world were humanoid, but still the Great Fairy is.

At the end of Ocarina of Time Navi flies out of the window of the Temple of Time without saying a word.
Goodbyes are always hard, aren't they? In the manga Navi does speak and her lasts words are "Link, I love you". Navi goes back to live in the forest, and since she's not Link's official Kokiri fairy she's not supposed to be with him for those reasons, but if they're good friends then I don't see why not, really. It's not like she said "goodbye", either, so maybe she intended to see him again.

Link loves Zelda because at the end of the game and manga he runs back to the castle to see her, and not anyone else.
He does go back to see Zelda, but at the start of Majora's Mask, if you remember, Link is looking for Navi. He's searching the forest so he can't be looking for Malon etc, and Saria will be in the obvious place of next door to his own home, or in the Sacred Forest Meadow. Besides, it was stated in the manga he was looking for Navi. Plus, the "friend with whom he parted ways when he finally fulfilled his heroic destiny" can only refer to Navi. It could have meant Zelda, but why look for her in the forest? The quote is about his companion - it's clear.
