+FAIRIES
The fairies from The Legend of Zelda series are apart of my list of
things that make a true Zelda game. Fairies of any form and
type appear
in
every Zelda game.
Healing Fairies
Healing fairies appear in every Zelda game, to be used as recovery items.
They're commonly red 'balls with wings', or humanoid fairies, sometimes with
wands. They can be bottled for later use, and - in
most 3D games - one can be found in a pot by each boss room door.
Link can open a bottled fairy at any time to heal himself (even if his
health s full). If Link takes one hit too many, and dies, any bottled fairy
on hand will automatically revive him.
They can also be found in Fairy Fountains, where lots fly around just ready
to be bottled, or heal any slight health loss to Link.
Healing fairies appear is certain places in the overworld. Hidden ones can be found, such as
in creates, grass and pots. In Ocarina of
Time, Navi points out seemingly unrelated spots, but a healing fairy will
appear when either the Song of Storms or Sun's Song is played. In
Twilight Princess, for every tenth floor completed in the Cave of
Ordeals, lots of healing fairies will be released in the Light Spirit
Springs, in replacement of Fairy Fountains.
In Spirit Tracks, Link learns the Song of Healing for the Spirit Pipes
before entering the Wooded Temple. The healing fairy tells him to play that
song whenever he needs healing, but only within dungeons, and only once at
that.
The song of Healing in Spirit Tracks is: green, white, green.
In Four Swords Adventures, there are Force Fairies, which can be randomly
found in places such as grass and pots, and one is acquired to the play once
they clear each stage. They stay within the Four Sword, and revive the four
Links when they take one hit too many.
Great Fairies
The Great fairies appear in nearly all Zelda games, taking on the form of a
humanoid fairy of Hylian (or larger) height. They reside in Great Fairy
Fountains, scattered in hidden places within the overworld of the games they
appear in.
Their job is to provide Link with an unlimited source of healing health and
magic power completely. In most games, she grants Link with an upgrade.
Being an item upgrade, magical power, or magic meter upgrade.
The highest rank of the fairy race is the Fairy Queen, who acts pretty much
like the Great Fairies. Stray fairies are small fairies that are shattered fragments
of a Great Fairy. A certain number of them needs to be collected and
returned to their respective fountain to repair the Great Fairy so she can
give Link something special and useful.
Companion Fairies
In several games, Link is aided by a constant companion, and the most
frequent race to be his companion is the fairy. Being Link's companion,
their job is to give hints, tips and a bit of a conversation within game
play. The fairies in particular provide Z/L-targeting, (almost)
encyclopaedic knowledge of enemies, fly over to things/people to point them
out, generate annoyance with their voice clips... Kokiri's also have
their own forest fairy companions whom is their guardian. They work
in a similar way to how Navi and Tatl so in game play, though that might
just be to illustrate game mechanics to the player.
Link's Companions In Games
These fairies appear in the official games.
Ciela
(シエラ, Shiera) is a light blue/white fairy who lives with Oshus on Mercay
Island in Phantom Hourglass. Prior to meeting Link she had lost her memory,
and sees Oshus as a grandfather figure. Ciela's true colour is yellow, and
is the Spirit of Courage - a servant to the Ocean King. Her other half,
which is revealed after beating the Temple of Courage, appears to be a
very lethargic, silent, and identical fairy. In the manga, he other half
is a cute, empty little girl, who hardly spoke. She give Link's
sword the sword beam power when a minimum of 10 Courage Gems are found.
She's a friendly fairy, and much like Navi.
Leaf
(リーフ, Riifu) is a red fairy from Phantom Hourglass.
He is the Spirit of Power, and gives Link a flame powered sword when a
minimum of 10 Power Gems are found.
Navi
(ナビィ, Nabii) is the first fairy companion to come the
Zelda franchise's way. The blue forest fairy made her debut in
Ocarina of Time, and served her purpose as Link's companion throughout
the game, being sent by the Great Deku Tree. Though she's found as an annoyance by some fans, Navi is a sweet
and caring girl who thinks the world of Link.
Navi
II (or so I like to call her)
appears in the Wii version of Twilight Princess, the cursor is in the shape of a
blue fairy, looking just like Navi, flapping her wings to make it look like
she's involved with what's on screen. Since she's the cursor, she's often
called Navi, considering Navi's name is short for 'navigation'.
Navi II also appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, before Link pulls the
Master Sword in Super Space Emissary. She's either there to keep the Wii
players of Twilight Princess at home (since Link is left-handed in SSBB), or
to pretend that this Link is the Hero of Time.
Neri
(ネリ, Neri) is a blue fairy from Phantom Hourglass. She is
the Spirit of Wisdom, and powers up Link's defence by half when a minimum
of 10 Wisdom Gems are found.
Tael
(トレイル, Tateiru) is not a companion to Link, but rather
one to Skull Kid in Majora's Mask. He is the younger brother of Tatl. He's weak-willed, and
has zero authority over Tatl, but is indeed a good boy, despite being a
clueless rascal.
Tatl
(チャット, Chatto) is the older sister of Tael. She is a yellow forest fairy who
befriended Skull Kid in Majora's Mask. She got stuck with Link, when she was
separated from her brother, thus her anxiety made her more forceful and
mean. She eventually warms up to Link, but covers her care with her blunt
and aggressive nature.
Link's Non-Canon Companions These fairies appear in the Zelda comics, manga
and TV shows.
Epheremelda
is a blonde, humanoid fairy, in a blue dress, who appears in the
A Link to the Past comic.
'Fairy',
an unnamed fairy, befriends Red in Himekawa's manga Four Swords +. The maidens sent her to help the Links. She's as nice,
friendly and useful as Ciela is. In Four Swords Adventures, each
Shrine Maiden take on a fairy form while she gives advice before the Links set
off on the next level.
Felicia
(フレシア, Fureshia) is a blonde, humanoid fairy from Cagiva Ataru's
manga for Link's Awakening. It's a love/hate relationship between her
and Link.
Miff
is a
blonde, humanoid fairy from the Valiant comics.
Spryte
is a
blonde/brown, humanoid fairy, in a pink dress, from the American TV show. She is the princess of the
fairies, and is close with Link and Zelda.
